Biography - Douglas Welcome

Douglas WelcomeBorn and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Douglas Welcome has been searching for musical outlets since day one. He began piano lessons at an early age and quickly started guitar soon after. While in middle school, he added trombone to his arsenal and continues to play occasionally for various recordings and gigs. It was his freshman year of high school that Douglas gravitated to the bottom. He began studying double bass when he was 14, and since then has held many principle bass positions in high school orchestras, youth honor orchestras, and college groups. He also has a passion for jazz, and has performed with many big bands and combos. While maintaining a private studio with guitar, bass, and cello students, he also was an apprentice teacher for bass and cello with the Point Loma String Project, a program designed to educate 5-12 year olds in the fundamentals of string playing.

In 2008, he graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University with a B. Mus in bass performance. Though his career is still in its beginning stages, he has had many opportunities to learn from a number of classical and jazz greats, including Gordon Goodwin and his Phat Band, Cyrus Chestnut, Terry Gibbs, Neal Smith, Christian McBride, and Barry Green. His primary teachers have included Bob Magnusson and Jeremy Kurtz. In contrast to working in the more sophisticated realm of classical and jazz music, Douglas also works with a number of singer-songwriters and rock bands in the San Diego and LA area. These include former RMC teacher Derren Raser, Charlie Peacock, Urban Rescue and many more. Douglas is also a proud member of Joel P. West and The Tree Ring.
