Biography - David Montoya
Born in San Diego, California, David Montoya brings his experience as a percussion artist to Recreational Music Center in Point Loma. His diverse interest in music has led him to collaborate with a wide range of musicians and ensembles in the Pacific Northwest; from The North Cascades Wind Ensemble, Skagit Valley Orchestra and Western Washington University Wind Ensemble to Click-Pop Records and performing artists such as Jenny Potts.
David began his study of percussion at an early age. He received private instruction in snare, timpani, xylophone and drumset beginning in 2001 from Dr. Patrick Roulet, currently Director of Percussion Studies at Towson University in Maryland. He continued studying at Western Washington University as a Percussion Performance major until 2008. His studies reflect his varied interests within the broad field of percussion music, including performance, composition and teaching.
His love of music led David to begin teaching private lessons in 2002 and at the Summer Sounds Music Festival Camp in Warm Beach, WA. In 2005, he developed a curriculum for teaching basic music skills at the early childhood level and taught it successfully at Kawaiiahao Private School in Honolulu, HI.
David also composes original music and, with several pieces in his repertoire, he hopes someday to direct a performance of his work. He enjoys performing and teaching Classical, Broadway, Jazz, Blues, New Age, Rock, Worship, Avante Garde, and Experimental Music and is pleased to share these styles with his students.
